This is such a neat idea- I have never seen anything quite like it. Not sure how well it would work where there is serious frost action, but I wonder if something similar couldn't be used with effect?
i have seen this done on a broad rock staircase, with small areas of rocks removed and planted with low growers and creepers, like the thymes,various sedums, chamomile and thrift [armeria]. stairs were quite passable, but small patches grew down the steps in a random way. very nice! sort of like a rock garden on the wide stone steps.
